KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of Pikeville men's tennis team picked up its first win of the season by topping Johnson 9-0 on Saturday at the Goodfriend Tennis Facility, home of the Tennessee Volunteers.
UPIKE (1-1) swept the three doubles points before putting the win away with victories at the third and second seeds.
Second-seeded Andres Alvarez registered the fifth and deciding point with s 6-0, 6-1 win over Michael Rhodenbaugh. Just before that win, third-seeded Devon Sgubin had beaten Matt Nordstrom 6-0, 6-0.
In the doubles portion, the top-seeded duo of Bailey Horne and Alvarez shut out Carson Byington and Nordstrom 8-0, No. 2 seed Sgubin and Hassan Haider topped Rhodenbaugh and Ethan Smith 8-3 and third-seeded Kenton Hall and Andres Miranda got past Caleb Weaver and Riley Reinhardt 8-1.
Sgubin wasn't the only Bear to tally a sweep in singles as the sixth-seeded Miranda also beat Weaver 6-0, 6-0.
