PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- Adison Corder entered the game late in the first quarter and didn't take long to make her presence known, scoring 13 points in the second frame alone to push the University of Pikeville women's basketball team along to a 66-48 win over Kentucky Christian on Tuesday.
While Corder got her scoring done in the second quarter, Aundrea Matchen led the Bears (12-12) in the game with 14 points and Jamie Castle added 12 points with a pair of 3s. Matchen and Corder paced UPIKE on the glass with seven boards each and Mia Greatrex swatted three blocks.
Jordan Holt led the Knights (9-15) with 15 points as their lone player in double figures. Holt tallied 12 of the points in the first half.
Neither team led by more than three points in the first 10 minutes, ending the opening frame knotted at 15 all. But the second quarter was far different and it started with the play of Corder off the bench.
The junior from Somerset started a stretch where she and Castle combined to make three straight 3s to put the Bears up 31-20.
That initial surge ended up being a 25-0 run for UPIKE that spanned the first and second halves and lasted 13 minutes altogether. UPIKE went from tied 20-20 with 8:18 left in the second to leading 40-20 at halftime before going on to build a 25-point advantage on a Rachel Lee layup.
UPIKE's additions to the lead stopped there though as KCU rattled off an 8-0 run of its own to get as close as 17 in the third quarter. A 3 by Shelby Hall made it a 16-point game with 4:04 to play, but the Bears scored eight of the next nine points to hold off any thought of a late rally.
The Bears outshot KCU 48-38 percent from the field, but were outrebounded 34-32. Forcing 15 turnovers helped though as UPIKE converted those into a 15-6 scoring advantage.
