Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The University of Pikeville men's and women's tennis teams started their spring break week with a pair of losses at Virginia Wesleyan on Tuesday. Pikeville's women lost 7-2, while the men held close before being edged 5-4.

With the losses, UPIKE's women drop to 2-3 and the men fall to 1-3.

On the men's side, the Marlins started out with a 2-0 lead as UPIKE took forfeit losses at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles. From there, Pikeville claimed wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles before going on to lose the first singles match to finish, giving Virginia Wesleyan a 3-2 lead.

Eventually, the Bears tied the match at 4-4 as Bailey Horne won at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-0, followed by Andres Alvarez winning 6-1, 7-5 at No. 2. But the comeback ultimately fell short as Mike Portera gave the Marlins a clinching fifth point with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5.

Wins were harder to come by in the women's match as UPIKE grabbed one win in doubles play and the other in singles.

The tandem of Andrea Hurtado and Camila Agudelo won at No. 2 doubles 8-4 over Katie Staman and Courtney Simmons. After that, the only UPIKE win went to Hurtado at the third singles seed.
