Softball Cruises to Two Wins in Myrtle Beach on Tuesday

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The University of Pikeville softball team increased its winning streak to six games as it took care of Spalding 9-1 in five innings and Albertus Magnus 7-1 on Tuesday during its spring break road trip to Myrtle Beach.

UPIKE now stands at 10-6 on the season as it continues to be led by the hot-hitting duo of Lee Collier and Megan Claypoole who are hitting .441 and .424, respectively.

UPIKE 9, Spalding 1 (5 inn.)

UPIKE got things started in the first inning when Claypoole singled on a 2-2 count, scoring two runs. The Bears went on to tally four runs in the second inning with Collier, Claypoole and Kelsey White tallying the RBIs.

Hannah Skaggs was credited with the win after throwing all five innings in the run-rule shortened win. She allowed one run on one hit while striking out four and walking one.

UPIKE outhit Spalding by the same amount as the final score at 9-1, including Claypoole and Jordan Gentry with two hits each. Gentry, Collier and Chandler Kelly all finished with doubles.

UPIKE 7, Albertus Magnus 1

The Bears got past Albertus Magnus 7-1 in large part due to a timely five runs in a big sixth inning that ended a streak of five straight frames with neither team scoring.

UPIKE's big inning came thanks to singles by Kelly and Jadyn Gibson, a fielder's choice hit by Claypoole and a double by White. Two more runs came home for the Bears in the seventh, helping it hold off Albertus Magnus which scored its lone run in the bottom of the seventh.

Claypoole grabbed the win after throwing seven innings, allowing one run on five hits and striking out seven batters.

UPIKE posted a 12-5 advantage at the plate this time around, led by Collier, Kelly, White and Emme Barker collecting two hits each. The only extra-base knock went to White with a double as she drove in a team-best two RBIs.

UP NEXT

The Bears continue the road trip with two games against teams from the Big Apple on Thursday, including a 9:30 a.m. ET first pitch against Alfred State, followed by an 11:30 a.m. game with Cazenovia.
