GEORGETOWN, Ky. – The University of Pikeville baseball team avoided a sweep by outlasting Georgetown 4-3 in the finale of their three-game series on Saturday.
With the split, the Bears move to 24-20 overall and 5-10 in the Mid-South Conference, while the Tigers are now 23-20 overall and 7-9 in league play.
Jacob Alverado led UPIKE at the plate all day, tallying two hits in each game, while Nelson Muniz hit a home run in game one. In game two, the Bears accounted for all the extra-base hits as Jorge Perez, Jay Vincent, Alec Barba and Luke Lubiniecki all hit doubles.
The finale was tied 2-2 heading into the seventh and final inning when Lubiniecki gave UPIKE its first lead with a double, followed by Lubiniecki scoring himself after a wild throw from the shortstop.
That Georgetown miscue ended up being important for UPIKE as the Tigers were able to get a run back in the bottom of the frame before Dalton Dahley completed his 2 1/3 inning save with a groundout to the mound.
Starter Brandon Sewell collected the win after scattering five hits for two runs with one strikeout in 4 2/3 innings. Reliever Breion Barron took a tough loss after throwing just a third of an inning in the seventh, giving up both of the Bears' go-ahead runs.
Game one had some excitement in the fourth inning when Muniz tied the game at 1-1 with his home run to left field. UPIKE took the lead an inning later on a single by Barba, but the good vibes came to a close in the bottom of the inning when Georgetown scored four runs on two outs with the help of two home runs.
Antonio Monroy, who hit two long balls on Friday, did the most damage with a 3-run shot to make it 4-2. By the time Sean Williams went yard to left, it was a 5-1 Tiger lead heading into the sixth inning.
The teams traded single runs in the sixth and seventh innings before Georgetown locked in its win with a four-run showing on three hits in the eighth.
Bruce Bell took the loss after giving up five runs on five hits with two strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings. Kyle Fieger tallied the win after allowing two runs on five hits with four batters struck out in six innings of work.
