PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Although not much has changed from last year's squad, UPIKE women's basketball had a resounding debut to its 2019-20 campaign on Friday with a 91-69 win against Wilberforce.
Five Bears scored in double figures in the contest, led by Theodora Odia and Brianna Burbridge who each had 18 points. The two each did a large chunk of their damage in the first half, in separate quarters.
Burbridge dominated the first quarter, scoring 11 of her points in the opening ten minutes. She finished 8-10 from the floor while adding six rebounds. Her scoring outburst guided the Bears to creating a bit of separation from the Bulldogs, who were hanging around in the beginning stages.
UPIKE won each of the individual quarters to continually build its lead.
Odia meanwhile, found her stroke in the second quarter, with nine points including a pair of threes. Pikeville's three-point shooting was an achilles' heel at times for the Bears last season, but showed optimism for this season by hitting 44 percent of their shots behind the arc.
It was a solid shooting day all-around for UPIKE as it shot over 50% from the field and over 70 percent from the free-throw stripe.
Conversely, the Bears held Wilberforce to 43 percent shooting and 17 percent from beyond the arc.
Pikeville's other double-digit scorers were Kayla Mullins, Sierra Feltner, and AJ Reed who all had 10 points. Bailey Frazier, the lone newcomer to see the floor, scored eight in her collegiate debut.
Outside of the scoring column, Elisabeth Latham had arguably one of the most dominant performances of the night with 10 total rebounds.
