PIKEVILLE, Ky. – UPIKE men's basketball had three full days of rest since its last contest and the rest appeared to have refueled the Bears as they routed Ohio-Eastern on Sunday, 120-48.
Pikeville dominated on both offense and defense in the contest. The Bears shot a season-high 65.4 percent from the floor and had a total of seven double-digit scorers.
UPIKE built a double-digit lead in the first three minutes and didn't look back from there en route to the victory.
Jordan Perry led all scorers with 22 points in just 17 minutes of game time. He was a perfect 8-8 from the floor with the only scoring attempt to not go in be a single free throw.
Luke Layhew picked up his second double-double of the season with a 12-point, 11-rebound effort. Chaz Hinds also made a statement by earning his first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in just 21 minutes.
In addition to the offensive explosion, the defense was just as impressive. Ohio-Eastern was able to just shoot 28.8 percent in the game and 21 percent from beyond-the-arc.
Perhaps even more impressively, UPIKE forced Eastern into 25 turnovers. Those 25 turnovers turned into 31 points for the Bears.
UPIKE also dominated the offensive glass 14-5, which UPIKE used to get 25 second chance points.
With the blowout win, head coach Kelly Wells was able to give his bench some needed playing time and some guys stepped up big with the opportunity. UPIKE's bench as a whole outscored Eastern's entire team, 55-40.
Each of UPIKE's three true freshmen scored in double figures off the bench.
JJ Ramey led the bench scorers with 14 points on perfect 6-6 shooting including a thunderous alley-oop dunk. Chaz Hinds earned his first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in just 21 minutes.
Korbin Spencer also enjoyed his first extended period on the floor and filled the stat sheet with 10 points, three rebounds, and three assists.
