WILMORE, Ky. -- There wasn't much offense to go around, but the Bears were able to find a way to get a midweek sweep of Asbury on Tuesday. With the sweep, UPIKE has now won 15 of its last 16 games and eight in a row.
Game 1
To call the day's first game a pitcher's duel would be an understatement, but UPIKE found a way to break through in the final inning for a 1-0 victory.
Asbury starter Paige Hill carried a perfect game into the sixth inning and a no-hitter into the seventh inning, stifling Bears batters all day.
UPIKE's only run of the game came in the final inning, where Jordan Gentry led the inning off with a single, the Bears first and only hit of the ballgame.
MacKenzie Pawlak laid down what should have been a simple sacrifice after Gentry's hit, but the throw to first sailed away and Gentry was able to come around to score the go-ahead and eventually, game-winning run.
While not as spotless as Hill, Megan Claypoole also put up a near perfect linescore from the circle in her fifth complete game shutout of the year. She gave up four hits and struck out five. Claypoole also did an excellent job limiting her damage as she didn't let a single Asbury baserunner reach third base all game.
Game 2
UPIKE's bats awoke some in the day's second game, but the Bears had to pull out another low-scoring contest, this one a 3-2 victory.
Three consecutive singles from Shelbi Knauer, Jordan Gentry, and MacKenzie Pawlak atop the order got the game's first run on the board from Pikeville in the third inning.
From there, it was lights out until the seventh. Bears starter Hannah Skaggs had another magnificent outing, going all seven innings while giving up just five hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.
UPIKE tacked on a pair of what would end up being necessary insurance runs in the seventh thanks to a two-run pinch-hit home run from Haley Karr, her first of the year.
Those runs would be crucial as the Eagles would come back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh while down to their final out. Asbury got a single with runners on first and second to score both runs, but Skaggs would strikeout the final batter to end the game.
UP NEXT
UPIKE will have another midweek doubleheader this week, at home on Thursday, against Midway. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Paul Butcher Field.
