Box Score 2 PIKEVILLE,
Ky. - UPIKE softball's road trip got off to a sour start on Wednesday after dropping both games of a doubleheader to Cumberlands (KY.)
Game 1
UPIKE was able to hang around with the Patriots in the early going, but Cumberlands rallied late to defeat the Bears 7-3.
UC jumped out to an early lead things to a two-run inning in the first. But the Bears were not deterred and got one run back in the second inning.
Kelsey White lead off the inning with a single and after a wild pitch Megan Claypoole helped herself with an RBI single. Pikeville would tie the game at 2-2 in the third with White getting an RBI of her own to score MacKenzie Pawlak, who reached with a double.
Cumberlands took the lead back in the 4th after stringing together a walk, double, and single, all with two outs, to score two runs in the inning and take a 4-2 lead.
The Bears cut into that lead a bit in the top of the fifth on Haley Osborne's RBI double that scored Jordan Gentry, but that would wind up being all UPIKE could score off Patriots starter Jessica Webb, who had already thrown two no-hitters this season.
UC would add on in the sixth inning to pull away on three hits and an error to get to the 7-3 final score.
Game 2
Unfortunately there wasn't much for Bears fans to cheer for in the days second game as UPIKE was held to one hit in a 8-0 run rule victory for Cumberlands.
Pikeville was able to make contact off UC starter Sidney Pennycuff as she only struck out five Bears, but they weren't able to find any gaps in the defense.
Haley Osborne got the only hit for Pikeville in the game.
There was hope for the Bears most of the game as Hannah Skaggs was able to hold the Patriots to a 1-0 lead through three innings. That run was a definition of a smallball run, reaching on an error, stealing two bases then scoring on a single.
Cumberlands' offense caught fire starting in the fourth with back-to-back three-run innings. UC got nine hits in the six innings to score its eight runs.
With the losses, UPIKE moves to 20-16 on the season with a four game set at Cumberland this weekend in Lebanon, Tenn.
