WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- It was another tough day at work for UPIKE baseball as the Bears fell in a run-rule shortened game, a 14-1 loss.
Cumberlands scored in every inning they batted in, capped off by a six-run sixth to kick in the 10-run rule.
UPIKE was able hold the Patriots relatively in check through the first two innings, limiting them to two runs. The Bears even tied the game at 1-1 thanks to a couple hit batters, a walk and an error.
Despite the score, Pikeville wouldn't get its first hit until the fifth inning when Kase Mattingly would poke a hit through the hole at second base.
Mattingly would be one of two Pikeville hitters to record multiple hits in the contest. Pastor Sanchez followed Mattingly with a hit of his own to get a runner in scoring position with no one out.
The next two batters would record outs before Luke Lubiniecki, the other Pikeville batter with two hits recorded an infield single to load the bases. But the Bears would end the inning without scoring.
An almost identical situation formed in the seventh with the Bears needing four runs to extend the game, but UPIKE received an almost identical result as well.
