Game Recap: Softball | | Sean Carley

UPIKE softball reverses tide, wins second game for doubleheader split with Cumberlands (Ky.)

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- Wednesday's doubleheader featured two games that were near mirror images of each other, ending with a split of the two games that allowed UPIKE softball to avoid a season sweep by Cumberlands.

Game 1

Cumberlands replicated the results of last week's contest, using one big rally to down the Bears 7-1 in the afternoon's first contest.

The Patriots nearly got on the board first in the second but an excellent throw from Haley Karr in left cut down the runner heading home and keep the game scoreless.

Starting pitcher Megan Claypoole helped herself in the third, leading off the inning with a double to right-center field. After a sacrifice bunt, Karr kept her positive game going with another double to score Claypoole and give UPIKE a 1-0 lead.

But the Patriots got to Claypoole in the fifth, rallying for six runs on just three hits. The last hit was the crucial blow, a grand slam to left.

Cumberlands added an insurance run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly and the Bears weren't able to mount a rally.

Game 2

In a role reversal from the first game, UPIKE rallied throughout the game to take a 6-1 win over the Patriots.

This time Cumberland took an early one-run lead with a run scoring on a passed ball in the first inning. However, the Bears answered right back on an RBI groundout from Haley Osborne to score Jordan Gentry. Gentry had three hits in the game and scored twice.

UPIKE added another run in the second inning after Shelbi Knauer reached on an error to extend the inning and Mercedes Boggs made the Patriots pay with a double in the gap to give Pikeville the lead.

Those two runs would be the beginning of a five-inning streak of scoring for the Bears. Pikeville's only crooked number on the scoreboard came in the third when UPIKE scored a pair of runs on two errors by the pitcher and a single.

MacKenzie Pawlak hit an RBI single in the fourth for her second RBI of the game, which extended the Pikeville lead to 5-1. The final scoring of the game came in the fifth after a walk, double, and groundout contributed UPIKE's sixth run of the game.

While all of this was happening, Hannah Skaggs was dealing an excellent outing, giving up just six hits and the unearned run in the first inning to push her record to 12-10 on the season and drop her ERA to 3.54.

UP NEXT

The Bears will have little time to rest before facing off against Bluefield on Thursday for another midweek doubleheader at home, starting at 2 p.m.
