Bears volleyball finishes opening weekend with doubleheader split

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – UPIKE volleyball's second day of competition mirrored the first's in terms of win-loss as the Bears won the opening game then lost the second in Saturday's doubleheader.

Game One vs Montreat

After shaking off some rust to open the match, UPIKE was in the driver's seat for most of the match and went on to beat the Cavaliers, 3-1 (24-26, 25-15, 25-22, 25-23).

UPIKE nearly won the first set but Montreat closed out the set with five of the last six points to steal it from the Bears' grasp. However, UPIKE's best trait from the weekend came back in strong form in the second set as Montreat was held to a .000 attack percentage in the second set.

Freshman Trinity Warfield showcased her potential as a middle hitter against Montreat with 14 kills on only 27 attacks, and five of those kills came in the second set. Her .407 attack percentage was the highest in the match among those with at least five kills.

The Bears were once again led offensively by Noelani Simpson who had 27 kills in the match to go with her 27 digs, both of which were match highs.

The third set looked bleak in the beginning as Montreat jumped out to a 8-4 lead, but after a timeout Pikeville responded with a 6-0 run to take the lead which the Bears would not surrender.

Set for started in similar fashion with the Bears falling behind early, but the comeback wouldn't come until the very end when, down 23-19, UPIKE rallied for six straight points, capped off by a pair of kills from Megan Frazier, who had 12 in the match.

Anchoring the Bears offense, setter Leigh Johnson stuffed the stat sheet yet again with another double-double with 53 assists and 10 digs.

Game Two vs Brescia

The Bears faced an uphill battle from the start in the day's second match coming off a short break, facing a Bearcat team that had nearly 24 hours of rest from its previous match.

That rest proved to be the key difference maker as Brescia was able to sweep Pikeville in straight sets (25-21, 25-15, 25-19).

Brescia came out on fire offensively, hitting .419 in the first set. From there, fatigue began to set in for the Bears who were playing their fourth match in 36 hours.

Simpson and Frazier led the team on offense with 15 and seven kills, respectively, while Brittany Reels led the defense with 12 total digs.
