PIKEVILLE, Ky. – UPIKE men's basketball hit a tough bump in the road on Thursday when it dropped a road matchup to Campbellsville, 72-66.
Three-point shooting provided the difference in the game. Campbellsville went 9-22 (40.9 percent) from long distance, while Pikeville went just 1-8 (12.5 percent).
Despite the poor night of outside shooting, UPIKE was able to keep pace with the Tigers with most of the game thanks to its interior presence. 50 of Pikeville's points came in the paint.
Da'Rell Domineck provided a big spark for the Bears off the bench with 12 points and five rebounds to lead that interior presence. Jordan Perry and Korbin Spencer both were able to add to UPIKE's offense with their slashing ability with 17 and 14 points, respectively.
UPIKE was fighting an uphill battle for most of the game after getting hit early with a 9-0 run out of the gate by Campbellsville.
The Bears eventually settled in and cut the lead down a one-score game with eight minutes left until halftime. Pikeville then went on a 9-0 run to take its first lead of the game and build up a five-point lead. That lead would then get cut to two at halftime.
The game was back and forth for most of the early going in the second half. Neither team led by more than four until Campbellsville hit three consecutive 3-pointers to take a 10-point lead.
UPIKE would answer right back with an 11-1 run to tie the game with 4:23 to go.
Campbellsville got back to back buckets from Ronald Taylor and Taiveyhon Mason to get a four-point lead with under a minute to go.
Mason was a thorn in UPIKE's side all night with 22 points, six rebounds, and eight assists.
After a pair of CU free throws, Spencer converted on an and-one to keep UPIKE alive, but the Tigers hit their free throws to secure the win.
