Baseball loses both ends of season opening doubleheader

EMERSON, Ga. – UPIKE baseball's season got off to a rough start on Friday, dropping both games of a season opening doubleheader to Point.

Game 1

Point's offense got off to an explosive start in a 15-4 win in the first game of the day.

The Skyhawks scored multiple runs in five of the game's seven innings to earn the win.

Although the final score didn't go in UPIKE's favor, there were still multiple highlights for the Bears.

Pikeville scored first on a sacrifice fly from Samuel Torres that scored Dillon O'Grady.

UPIKE's other three runs all came off the bat of Eduardo Bello, which included a solo home run in the fourth and a two-run single in the fifth.

Bello was one of three Bears to record multiple hits in the contest. Kase Mattingly and Tyler Menrath both got their seasons started well with multi-hit efforts.

Game 2

UPIKE ran into a dominant starting pitcher in the day's second game, a 9-1 decision for Point.

The Skyhawks' Eduardo Munoz put together an excellent performance on the mound, throwing five innings of one-run, four-hit ball.

Two of those four hits came in the third inning when Pastor Sanchez led off the frame with a hit and Tyler Menrath followed with his first triple of the year.

Ronaldo Tijero and Hayden Jung were the two other players to record hits in the game.

Point, meanwhile came out with another offensive statement, scoring five runs in the first two innings combined.

UP NEXT

UPIKE baseball closes the series out with a single nine-inning contest tomorrow at noon in Emerson, Ga.
