PIKEVILLE, Ky. – UPIKE women's basketball couldn't upset the nation's No.1 team on Thursday, losing to Campbellsville, 78-56.
The Tigers' stifling defense caused problems for the Bears all game, forcing 31 turnovers. Those turnovers turned into 37 points for Campbellsville.
Even with the turnovers and resulting easy buckets, the two teams shot almost equal in the contest. Campbellsville converted on 46 percent of their shots, while Pikeville hit 42.
Mary Englert had another great game for the Bears, scoring a game-high 24 points on just 18 shots. She also hit four of her seven 3-point attempts.
There were almost two different games played with each team controlling two different quarters. Campbellsville took control in the first and third quarters, outscoring the Bears 50-16 combined. However, UPIKE outscored the Tigers 40-28 in the second and fourth quarters.
Bailey Frazier also had a strong game off the bench, scoring 12 points, all in the second half, with a pair of made 3-pointers and Theodora Odia neared a double-double with seven points and nine rebounds.
After a rough first quarter, UPIKE closed the second on a 10-2 run to get the lead within 14 points.
Campbellsville then opened the second half in a similar fashion to the first with a massive run. UPIKE then cut into it again but ran out of time to make a comeback.
