Beckley, WV – Upike women's basketball picked up their second straight win on Tuesday night, topping West Virginia Tech 69 - 64. The Bears start the season 2-0 following their season opening victory over Milligan.
A trio of Bears notched double-digit scoring efforts, led by
Brianna Burbridge who recorded a double-double with 17 points, 12 rebounds. The senior shot 6-14 from the field while going 5-7 from the charity stripe.
Sierra Feltner shot an impressive 55 percent from the field on her way to a 16-point performance. Feltner went 6-11, including a pair of threes.
Mary Englert tacked on 13-points and five rebounds in 32 minutes of action.
UPIKE shot 39.7 percent from the field as a team, drilling 25 of 63 shots. From the free throw line the Bears managed a cool 16-21 for 76 percent. Pikeville took the advantage on the boards as well, pulling in 42 rebounds featuring a season high 21 offensive boards.
West Virginia Tech held the advantage the majority of the first half, leading by as much as six midway through the second quarter. With under four minutes to go in the first half, UPIKE went on a 8-3 run to take a 33-32 advantage at the break.
The Bears exploded to start the second half, scoring eight straight to stretch their lead to as much as 11 with 6:13 to go in the third. WVU Tech would make a run in the final quarter, reclaiming the lead by a single point with 2:25 to play but UPIKE would hold on in the closing minutes to secure the win.
UPIKE women's basketball will return to action this weekend, returning to Appalachian Wireless Arena to take on Midway. Tip-off between the Bears and Eagles is slated for 4PM on Saturday, November 28
th.
