LEBANON, Tenn. – UPIKE women's basketball picked up a much-needed win on Thursday night by defeating Cumberland, 64-57.
UPIKE outscored the Phoenix 37-21 in the second half and 19-7 in the fourth quarter to erase a late second quarter run by CU.
The entire game seemed to be waves of runs back and forth.
Pikeville took control early thanks to a dominant opening burst from Mia Greatrex. The senior put on a show in the first quarter scoring 11 of UPIKE's 20 points in the period. Greatrex ended up scoring 17 back in her home state in front of her family.
Foul trouble stunted Greatrex's production, but Elisabeth Latham filled in perfectly, picking up her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds while not coming off the floor for the entire game.
Cumberland seized any sense of momentum as the two teams went into halftime after CU closed out the half on an 11-0 run. That rally continued into the third quarter as the Phoenix built as large as an 11-point lead.
UPIKE then went on an 12-0 run of their own to take a one-point lead into the fourth quarter. Kayla Mullins had six points in that run and 17 overall to tie Greatrex for the game high.
The Bears then utilized two of its biggest strengths to put the game late: their defense and free-throw shooting.
UPIKE held Cumberland to six percent (1-15) shooting from the floor in the final ten minutes, and also went 10-10 from the free throw stripe.
