PIKEVILLE, Ky. – UPIKE baseball opened up its Mid-South Conference part of the schedule with a big win on Friday, defeating Lindsey Wilson 6-2.
UPIKE was led on the mound with another quality start from senior Brady Cappe. The Canadian went eight full innings, surrendering just five hits and the two earned runs while striking out eight.
The Bears were able to tag the Blue Raider pitching staff for eight hits in the game. UPIKE scored first in the third inning, which started with a single, hit batter, and error to load the bases. Noah Helton came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Tyler Menrath.
That scoreline stuck until the sixth inning when the Bears rallied for five runs on five hits, nearly all with two outs. Demarco Miller started the inning with a single, then back-to-back doubles from Pastor Sanchez, Noah Helton, and then after a walk Dillon O'Grady scored four runs for the Bears.
Sanchez and Helton both had two hits in the game. The final run came on an RBI single from Menrath. He and O'Grady were the two Bears to record multiple RBIs in the game.
However, LWC would try to make it interesting late. The Blue Raiders scored two runs in the eighth inning, then loaded the bases in the ninth to bring the tying run to the plate with just one out.
UPIKE then turned to Jorden Davy who earned the save by striking out his first batter then got the final batter to fly out to left.
