PIKEVILLE, Ky. – UPIKE baseball faced a rough end to its conference opening weekend, losing both games of the series-ending doubleheader to Lindsey Wilson on Saturday.
Game 1 – LWC wins 6-4
The first game of the day ended up being a heartbreaker after Lindsey Wilson scored three times in the ninth inning to steal the win from the Bears, 6-4.
UPIKE took the lead in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run home run from Eduardo Bello, his second of the season. That homer put UPIKE ahead 4-3, its first lead since the third inning.
Pikeville built that initial lead on an RBI double from Kase Mattingly. However, the lead was shortlived as three straight Lindsey Wilson gits ended up scoring two for the Blue Raiders.
UPIKE was two outs away from the win, but tied it on a RBI double from Jed Arend and took the lead on the next batter.
The Bears were unable to thwart the momentum and couldn't pull off a comeback.
Game 2 – LWC wins 8-1
The second game was much more dominant for the Blue Raiders as they scored eight runs in the first four innings en route to the 8-1 win.
UPIKE's offense struggled against starter Ethan Escue as the Bears managed just three hits in the game.
The Bears scored their lone run of he game in the sixth inning when Tyler Menrath scored on a sacrifice fly from Zach Hill.
