UPIKE Falters At Campbellsville

Campbellsville, KY – The University of Pikeville women's volleyball team lost on the road Tuesday night to the Campbellsville University Tigers, 3-0. The Bears hung tough in set one but struggled in the final two sets.

They move to 2-19 on the season and 1-9 in the Mid-South Conference. Leading the Bears was Hunter Clewis, who had seven kills and 10 digs in the match. Leigh Johnson had 13 assists while Mikela Cook recorded a team-high 13 digs.

Set By Set
The first set was tight throughout, as both teams traded runs. The Bears found themselves down 15-12 before three Kiara Warrens aces sparked a 5-0 flurry to give them the lead at 17-15. UPIKE would hold a slight 21-20 advantage later in the set, but the Tigers would rally with a 5-2 run to take the opening set 25-23.

The second set was tied at 7-7 before a 15-2 Campbellsville run made it 22-9 and seized any hope of the Bears tying things up. They would win the set 25-14 and go up 2-0 in the match after the Bears rallied late.

UPIKE exploded out of the gate in the third set, going up 7-0 and grabbing some momentum. They were helped by kills from Yeryvel Catala and Cheyenne Martinez, while the Tigers also made some mistakes. Unfortunately for the Bears, they couldn't hold on to the momentum and would surrender a 19-3 Tigers flurry to fall behind 19-10 in the set. Campbellsville never looked back, winning the set 25-14 and the match 3-0.

What's Up Next
UPIKE will return home to the UPIKE Gym on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. when they host Georgetown College in MSC action. In their first meeting last month, the Tigers bested UPIKE 3-1.
