All-Around Team Effort Leads Bears Past Georgetown

Pikeville, KY – The University of Pikeville women's volleyball team beat the Georgetown College Tigers Thursday night in the UPIKE Gym, 3-1. The gym was rocking from the start, as the crowd played a big factor in the match. Dating back to 2007, the Bears have not defeated the Tigers until tonight.

Leading the way for UPIKE was Hunter Clewis, who recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 14 digs and 13 kills. Yeryvel Catala also had 10 kills while Kiara Warrens (16), Mikela Cook (14), Cheyenne Martinez (13), and Leigh Johnson (12) all had double-digit digs in the contest. Johnson had her second double-double this season after a season-high 33 assists. Oksana Vucetic also had a night to remember at the net, recording a career-high seven total blocks (4 solo, 3 assist), as she made several crucial blocks in the contest including the match winner in set four.

The Bears lost the first set, but battled their way back to take the next three sets and pick up the victory. The win moves them to 3-19 this season and 2-9 in the Mid-South Conference.

Falling Behind
The first set saw the Bears go down 20-11 before trying to make an incredible comeback. They rattled off five straight points to make it 20-16, but unfortunately it wouldn't be enough as they dropped the set 25-18 to go down 1-0.

Rallying Back
In set two, UPIKE found themselves down 23-19, with things looking bleak and a 2-0 deficit likely. However, a Catala kill sparked a 5-0 run to give the Bears a 24-23 lead. The set would eventually be tied at 25-25, but a pair of Martinez kills tied the match up at 1-1 after a thrilling set.

Putting The Cherry On Top
The third set saw UPIKE take a commanding 22-15 lead, but the Tigers wouldn't be counted out. They began to give UPIKE fits, as a trio of Isabella Hughes kills fueled a 7-0 flurry to tie the set at 22-22. The Bears held strong however, and a Clewis kill gave UPIKE a 25-23 set win and 2-1 match lead.

The Tigers held a 15-11 lead in set four, before the Bears began their comeback. An 8-1 run ensued for UPIKE, as they took the lead at 19-16 and seized the momentum. Two Clewis kills paired with Georgetown mistakes sparked the rally. This run would prove to be the difference in the set as the Tigers couldn't comeback and the Bears won the set 25-21 and the match 3-1, much to the delight of the Pikeville faithful.

What's Up Next
The Bears will hit the road once again as they travel to Bluefield, WV for a tri-match at Bluefield State College on Saturday afternoon. They begin the day with Calumet College of St. Joseph at 2:00 p.m. before taking on Bluefield State at 4:00 p.m.
