Pikeville, KY – The University of Pikeville women's volleyball team dropped a Mid-South Conference matchup on the road Saturday afternoon to No. 12 Life University, 3-1. The loss drops UPIKE to 1-18 this season and 0-8 in the MSC.
Leading the way for the Bears was
Yeryvel Catala with 12 kills and
Cheyenne Martinez adding 11. Over the last two matches, Martinez has moved from being the primary setter for the UPIKE offense to being on the attack. She also recorded her first double-double of the season after recording 10 digs to go along with the 11 kills.
Mikela Cook and
Leigh Johnson both recorded 11 digs in the match while Johnson recorded her first double-double of the season after dishing out 28 assists.
Set By Set
The Bears took a 7-5 lead early in the first set, before surrendering a 12-2 run to fall behind 17-9. They would ultimately drop the set 25-13.
The second set saw UPIKE get behind 20-10 and couldn't stage a comeback as they lost 25-16 and went down 2-0 in the match.
The Bears fell behind 18-10 in the third set, but they began to roar back. Martinez led the charge with a pair of kills as they went on a 9-3 run to cut it to 21-19. The run continued as UPIKE took advantage of a trio of Running Eagle errors to take a late 23-22 lead. Life briefly tied it at 23-23 before a service error and a Martinez kill gave the Bears the 25-23 set win.
The fourth set was all Life early on before UPIKE cut it to 12-10. Unfortunately for UPIKE, the Running Eagles lead expanded to 17-11 as they would come away with the 25-14 set win and 3-1 match win.
What's Up Next
The Bears will return to the court on Tuesday when they head to Campbellsville University to take on the Tigers at 7:00 p.m.
