Pikeville, KY – The University of Pikeville women's volleyball team lost their final regular season match Friday night to the Cumberland University Phoenix, 3-0. Cumberland hit .282 as a team while the Bears hit below .100.
Leading the Bears was
Yeryvel Catala with 10 kills while
Mikela Cook (13),
Hunter Clewis (11), and
Leigh Johnson (10) all recorded double-digit digs.
Cheyenne Martinez also had 17 assists in the contest. Cook has had double-digit digs in nine of her last 11 matches.
UPIKE finishes the regular season with a record of 5-25 overall and 2-14 in the Mid-South Conference.
Set By Set
The Phoenix jumped out to an 18-10 lead in set one before UPIKE began to creep back into it. A pair of
Oksana Vucetic kills along with a Catala kill sparked a 7-1 rally to cut the lead to 19-17. Cumberland would hold on however, taking the set 25-19.
Cumberland held a 16-8 lead in set two before the Bears tried to make a comeback, rattling off a 4-1 run to make it 17-12. The Phoenix attack was too much however, as they would win the set 25-17 and take a 2-0 match lead.
The Phoenix would hold the Bears in check in the final set, winning the match 3-0 after a 25-15 set victory.
What's Up Next
As mentioned, that concludes the regular season for UPIKE, but they will be back in action next week for the MSC Tournament in Bowling Green, KY beginning on Thursday, November 11th. The Bears opponent is to be determined.
