Indianapolis, IN – After Friday's first NCBCA poll slotted the UPIKE men's bowling program second on the national stage, the Bears traveled to Indiana for the Hoosier Classic II and III. UPIKE's varsity unit earned a seventh place finish out of 34 teams in Saturday's event, and finished 14
th on Sunday.
Friday's NCBCA Coaches Top 20 Poll saw the Bears snag a number two spot with 968 points and seven first place votes. The Bears were just 50 points behind top-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater.
The Hoosier Classic is an important tournament in the bowling community and consisted of teams ranging from NAIA through NCAA DI. This weekend's action consisted of the II and III installations of the Classic, classified as two separate events. Saturday featured 25 baker games only while Sunday was a five-game team competition.
On Saturday, the Bears knocked down 5044 pins in 25 baker games, averaging 201.76 pins per game. The unit finished just outside the top five at seventh, an impressive feat in what was the largest tournament so far this season. Calumet College of St. Joseph claimed the title with 5333 pins.
Out of eight junior varsity squads, UPIKEs JV finished the baker games with a score of 4773. The Bears placed fourth, just 13 pins behind third place Webber International.
Sunday's Hoosier Classic III saw the Bears finish 14
th, knocking down 4545 pins through five team games. The individual field was huge featuring 275 bowlers who recorded scores for 33 different teams.
Ryan Hernandez was the top finisher for UPIKE, totaling 982 pins and notching his highest score with a 227 in game four. Jonathon Lovett and
Jacob Schrock earned their spot in the top 50, finishing 47
th and 48
th respectively. Lovett's 943 pins slotted him 47
th as the senior averaged 188.6 pins while
Schrock finished one pin behind and averaged 188.2.
UPIKE's JV unit managed a top three finish with a score of 4506 in the nine-team field.
UPIKE men's bowling returns to action for the MSC Louisville Collegiate on Saturday, February 27
th. The conference event will take place at Fern Valley Lanes in Louisville, KY.
