Pikeville, KY – Men's tennis took on (RV) Campbellsville on Sunday in the Bears first home event of the 2021 season. UPIKE began the day at 2-0 in the doubles before dropping four of six in the singles competition, narrowly falling 4-3 to the Tigers.
Carlos Villamizar and Juan Alzate opened the competition, defeating Campbellsville's number one doubles team 6-3. The duo of Villamizar and Alzate are undefeated in 2021 with a record of 3-0.
Juan Medina and
Timur Chsherbakov also claimed a 6-4 victory against Campbellsville to remain undefeated on the season. After Campbellsville claimed a win in the third doubles event, the Bears entered the singles portion 1-0.
Campbellsville picked up two wins to open, defeating Chsherbakov and Villamizar before Alzate ended the streak with a win, going 7-6 and 6-3 over the Tigers' Merin Sanchez. Medina followed up with a win to even up the count, going 2-1 in three sets to win his singles match.
The Tigers were able to push for two wins to close out the day, narrowly escaping a loss to claim the 4-3 win over the Bears.
UPIKE men's tennis enters a stretch that includes five straight home events as they prepare for a tough conference stretch. The Bears will be back at Bob Amos on Saturday, March 20
th to take on Muskingum.
