Men's Tennis Shuts Out Shawnee State for First MSC Win of 2021

Pikeville, KY – UPIKE men's tennis notched an impressive 7-0 victory over Shawnee State on Friday afternoon, notching the teams first MSC victory of 2021.

The power duo of Juan Medina and Timur Chsherbakov opened in dominating fashion as they took care of SSU's number one doubles pair 6-0. Juan Alzate and Luis Gayoso handed a 6-3 loss to Shawnee in the second doubles match before Carlos
Villamizar and Fernando Proano wrapped up the Bears double's sweep with a 6-1 win.

UPIKE swept the singles events as well, winning each match in two sets. Chsherbakov took on Mitchell in the number one singles, tallying a 6-2 win in set one before sealing the win with a 6-4 victory in the second set. Villamizar went 6-2 in both sets to defeat SSU's Zayden Rinehart before Alzate took care of Hanshaw 6-1 and 6-3.

Medina kept the momentum alive in the number four singles match, only allowing his opponent a single point in each set. Gayoso gave the same treatment to Aiden White in the fifth match before Proano sealed the Bears victory with a 12-0 sweep in the final singles match.

The win improves the young UPIKE squad to 2-2 on the season with a conference mark of 1-2. Friday marks the first Mid-South Conference victory for first year head coach Obed Quiles.

The Bears look ahead to their toughest test of the season on Sunday, March 28th against ninth-ranked Lindsey Wilson. The Blue Raiders come to Pikeville for a match starting at 1PM.
