Tigers Topple UPIKE Thursday Night

Georgetown, KY - The University of Pikeville women's volleyball team lost to the Georgetown College Tigers Thursday night on the road, 3-1. The Bears had a great first set, winning 25-18 before dropping the next three games to lose the match. Yeryvel Catala led the Bears offensively with 11 kills while Erin Ende added in a season-high seven kills. Leigh Johnson had a season-high 15 digs while Cheyenne Martinez dished out 35 assists in the match.

This loss moves UPIKE to 0-12 this season and 0-2 in the Mid-South Conference. They return to the court Saturday afternoon in their home opener in the UPIKE Gym against Campbellsville University at 1:00 p.m.

Coming Out Swinging
The first set was all UPIKE from the start as they grabbed an 8-3 lead off the strength of kills from Oksana Vucetic, Ende, and Catala. The Tigers would claw their way back into the set, making it 14-12. However, the Bears wouldn't blink, using a 5-0 push to earn some breathing room at 19-12. All six points down the stretch were kills for UPIKE as they took the first game 25-18. The Bears hit an impressive .458 in the set, only committing a pair of errors.

Shifting Momentum
After a great first set, UPIKE would struggle in set two, getting down by a score of 20-6 and never being able to recover. They went on a small 4-2 run to make it 22-10, but it wasn't enough as they lost 25-11. Georgetown hit .545 in the set.

Set three saw the Bears trailing 11-10 before a set changing 11-3 flurry occurred for the Tigers to give them a 22-13 lead. UPIKE showed moxie, cutting the lead to five after a 6-2 run, but it wasn't enough as they dropped the game 25-19 and trailed in the match 2-1.

The final set saw Georgetown grab a commanding 14-4 lead before the Bears tried to make a comeback. They pushed the Tigers to their limit, using an 11-3 run to cut it to just two points at 17-15. Catala captained the push, as she recorded five of her 11 kills. Unfortunately for UPIKE, Georgetown answered with a match sealing 8-2 burst to take the set 25-17 and the match 3-1.

What's Up Next
As mentioned, the Bears will be right back in action on Saturday afternoon when they take on the visiting Campbellsville University Tigers in the newly renovated UPIKE Gym at 1:00 p.m.
