Pikeville, KY – The University of Pikeville women's volleyball team dropped their home opener in the UPIKE Gym Saturday afternoon to the visiting Campbellsville University Tigers 3-0.
Hunter Clewis led the Bears with six kills and 11 digs while
Leigh Johnson also added 11 digs for UPIKE.
Cheyenne Martinez had 16 assists in the match.
After the loss, UPIKE falls to 0-13 on the season and 0-3 in the Mid-South Conference. They will be back in action on Tuesday in Pikeville when they host the Shawnee State Bears.
In the first two sets, UPIKE and Campbellsville were evenly matched. In set one, the Tigers held a slim 21-19 advantage after the Bears had cut the lead to two after trailing 20-16. However, Campbellsville would seize the momentum and end the set on a 4-0 run with a pair of kills coming from Alina Zellin and the Tigers took the opening set 25-19.
The second set saw UPIKE fall behind late 22-18, but a
Yeryvel Catala kill and a Tiger error put them right back into it at 22-20. That would be all they would get though, as Campbellsville recorded three straight kills to win 25-20 and go up 2-0 in the match.
The final set saw the Tigers up 14-11 before completely taking over the set with a 9-0 flurry to go up 23-11 and take away any hope of a Bears victory. They would win the set 25-13 and the match 3-0.
