Shawnee State Sinks UPIKE Tuesday Night

Pikeville, KY – The University of Pikeville volleyball team lost at home Tuesday night to the Shawnee State Bears 3-0 in Mid-South Conference action. This drops them to 0-14 on the season and 0-4 in the MSC. UPIKE was led by a trio of players in Yeryvel Catala, Megan Frazier, and Hunter Clewis, who all recorded six kills. Leigh Johnson had 16 digs while Clewis added 15 digs. Cheyenne Martinez chipped in 20 assists for the Bears.

The Bears will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Williamsburg, KY to take on University of the Cumberlands.

Set By Set
The first set was dominated by Shawnee State early as they took a 7-1 lead before a 5-2 UPIKE rally made it 9-6. The run was highlighted by two Catala kills. However, Shawnee State answered with a 9-1 run to seize the momentum with an 18-7 lead. UPIKE would cut it to six at 19-13, but Shawnee State finished the set on a 6-1 flurry to win 25-14 and go up 1-0 in the match.

The Bears held a 10-7 advantage in set two thanks to a pair of kills from Catala along with one from Frazier and Clewis. Shawnee State had a strong response with a 7-0 run to take a 14-10 lead. UPIKE would fight back to tie it at 16-16 after Clewis exploded for four kills during their 6-2 run. Clewis recorded three straight kills for UPIKE to get the crowd on their feet. Shawnee State held a slim 21-20 lead late in the set, but UPIKE couldn't take advantage and surrendered four straight points to lose the game 25-20 and go down 2-0 in the match.

Shawnee State led 13-11 in set three before grabbing the momentum with a 3-0 push to lead 16-11. The Bears couldn't claw their way back into the set and lost it 25-17 to drop the match 3-0.

As mentioned, UPIKE will return to the court on Saturday afternoon in Williamsburg, KY when they take on University of the Cumberlands Patriots in MSC action at 2:00 p.m.
