Williamsburg, KY - The University of Pikeville volleyball team dropped a road contest Saturday afternoon at University of the Cumberlands, 3-0.
Hunter Clewis led the Bears with seven kills while also adding eight digs.
Leigh Johnson recorded eight digs while
Cheyenne Martinez added 17 assists. The loss drops the Bears to 0-15 on the season and 0-5 in the Mid-South Conference. They will be back in action on Monday night in Pikeville when they battle Alice Lloyd College at 7:00 p.m.
Set By Set
UPIKE struggled offensively in set one, as a 5-1 Patriots run put them in a 14-7 hole they wouldn't get out of. They dropped the set 25-11.
In the second set, the Bears fell behind 20-10 before going on a huge 9-3 run to cut it to four at 23-19. Two
Yeryvel Catala kills along with a few Patriots errors sparked the flurry. Unfortunately, UPIKE couldn't complete the comeback as they lost the set 25-20 to go down 2-0 in the match.
Set three saw UPIKE hold a late 22-18 lead with an array of different Bears contributing to the advantage. This lead would extend to 24-20 before Cumberlands exploded back into the set. Two Lily Chapman kills paired with two aces set up the Patriot comeback that saw the Bears fall 26-24 after a 6-0 run ended the match for UPIKE.
