Pikeville, KY – The University of Pikeville volleyball team picked up their first win of the season tonight against the visiting Alice Lloyd College Eagles, 3-0. It was a great match from start to finish as the Bears didn't allow the Eagles to score more than 13 points in a set.
UPIKE was led by seniors
Yeryvel Catala and
Megan Frazier who recorded 12 and 10 kills, respectively.
Hunter Clewis had 13 digs and
Leigh Johnson added 11 for the Bears while
Cheyenne Martinez dished out 22 assists.
This win improves them to 1-15 on the season, as they will return to Mid-South Conference play on Wednesday evening when they travel to Thomas More University to take on the Saints.
Dominant Start
The Bears jumped all over the Eagles to start the match, grabbing a 13-2 lead in set one off the strength of a trio of Catala kills and a pair of Frazier kills. The Bears would take the set 25-10 after three-straight
Mikela Cook aces ended the set.
Putting It Away
Set two was more of the same for UPIKE as they took a 17-4 lead. The advantage was sparked by three Catala kills and two kills from Frazier. Clewis also added in two aces during the outburst.
UPIKE would come away with the 25-13 set win, holding the Eagles to a -.040 hitting percentage in the set.
Alice Lloyd tried to make a comeback in set three, cutting the lead to seven at 16-9 after falling behind 16-6. It wasn't to be however, as the Bears ripped off a 9-4 flurry to end the set at 25-13 and give them the 3-0 sweep of the Eagles.

Cook recorded four aces for UPIKE while seven different Bears recorded an ace in the contest. Their 16 aces as a team is the most in a match this season.
UPIKE also recorded a season-high 11 total blocks in the match (8 assists, 3 solo) with
Oksana Vucetic leading the way with two block solos and three block assists. The three block assists tie her career-high (Oct. 26, 2020 at Alice Lloyd).
