Bears End Captain Jack Quad on Losing End

Brunswick, GA – The University of Pikeville women's volleyball team dropped their first match of the day Saturday morning, 3-1 against Florida College in the Captain Jack Quad. Hunter Clewis led the Bears with 15 kills in the match, hitting a season-best .467. She also led the way with 11 digs, posting her second double-double of the season in the process. Cheyenne Martinez had 23 assists in the match.

In match two, the Bears fell in their rematch with the Coastal Georgia Mariners 3-0. Hunter Clewis led UPIKE with eight kills and seven digs while Cheyenne Martinez dished out 15 assists. They drop to 0-10 on the season and will be back on the court when they travel to Freed-Hardeman for their first Mid-South Conference match of the year next Friday at 8:00 p.m.

Florida College defeats Pikeville 3-1 (21-25, 25-14, 25-16, 25-15)
In set one, the Bears jumped out to a 12-8 lead and never looked back. UPIKE took this lead after taking advantage of some Falcon errors paired with two kills from Yeryvel Catala and Hunter Clewis.

The Falcons would stay on the Bears heels all set long, pushing UPIKE's lead to just one at 17-16 but the Bears held strong. A quick 3-0 spurt gave UPIKE some breathing room at 20-16, and they would not relinquish the lead en route to a 25-21 set win to go up 1-0 in the match.

Set two proved to be a different story as the Falcons took complete control with a 16-3 run to begin the set. The Bears would show some moxie and push the score to 22-14, but the tough start was too much to overcome as they dropped set two 25-14 as the match was all square heading into the third set.

The third set was all tied up early on at 6-6 before a 3-0 run fueled by two Florida College aces gave them a 9-6 lead and forced a Bears timeout. The lead continued to grow for Florida out of the timeout as the 3-0 run turned into an 8-0 run to push their lead to 14-6.

Kills from Cheyenne Martinez, Megan Frazier, and Hunter Clewis sparked a 7-1 Bears rally to put themselves right back into the set at 15-13. However, the Falcons answered the call with a 3-0 flurry of their own that included a kill and an ace to force a UPIKE timeout with the score at 18-13.

UPIKE wouldn't be able to complete a comeback as the Falcons took set three 25-16 to lead the match 2-1 heading into the fourth set.

The final set was dominated by Florida College from the start as they took a 23-10 lead. UPIKE showed some fight, rattling off a 5-1 run to make it 24-15, but it wasn't enough as the Falcons won the set 25-15 and the match 3-1.

Coastal Georgia defeats Pikeville 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-18)
The Mariners held a steady lead throughout the first set, grabbing a 22-12 lead and putting the Bears out of reach en route to a 25-17 set win to go up 1-0.

Set two was tight throughout as UPIKE held the lead at 17-16 before a 5-1 Coastal Georgia sprint gave them a 21-18 lead. The Bears cut the deficit to 24-22 after a Clewis kill but couldn't complete the comeback as they dropped the set 25-23.

Coastal Georgia consistently held a one-point lead throughout set three with UPIKE never quite being able to tie the set. With the Bears still hanging around at 18-16, Coastal Georgia ended the match on a 7-2 run to take the set 25-18 and the match 3-0.

What's Up Next
