Columbia, KY – Bears women's basketball suffered a 88-84 loss at the hands of Lindsey Wilson on Monday in a game that was decided in the final minutes of the fourth quarter.
Mary Englert put up a new career high with 31 points to lead all scorers.
The Bears shot their second best clip from the field this season against the Blue Raiders, going 30-62 for 48.4%. Rebounds also went in UPIKE's favor, outrebounding LWC 27-23. As has been the case this season, the Bears grabbed an impressive 12 offensive boards.
The contest featured a total of nine lead changes, all coming in the third and fourth quarters. One of the deciding factors was Lindsey Wilson's performance in the paint where they outscored the Bears 46-28.
Englert's career performance came by way of 11 makes on 18 attempts, a three pointer, and eight points from the free throw line. Englert played 31 minutes in the contest and finished with three rebounds, two steals and an assist.
Also in double figures was junior
Bailey Frazier who finished with 19 points, highlighted by a nine point quarter in the third.
Sierra Feltner also had nine in the third and finished with 13 points, five rebounds, and three assists.
Lindsey Wilson took the advantage early on, going on a 15-6 run to open the first quarter which put the Bears in catch-up mode for the remainder of the first half. UPIKE knocked the lead down to six by the end of the first quarter after going on a 9-4 run. The Bears trailed by at least four until the 2:53 mark in the second when Englert followed through on a layup to make it a one point ballgame. At halftime the Bears trailed 35-34.
UPIKE's first lead in the contest came in the first 20 seconds of the second half on a layup from Frazier and it sparked a back-and-forth that would last much of the third quarter. Lindsey Wilson tied the game three times before going on a 5-0 run that gave them a 61-58 lead going into the fourth.
Alexis Reed tied the game with a free throw with 8:19 left to play and the Bears would briefly hold the lead. With 5:15 to go, Stamper connected on a layup to give the Bears a 72-68 lead which was their largest of the period but Lindsey would steal back the lead at the 2:38 mark. The Blue Raiders stayed just a step ahead as the game wound to a close, holding on for the four point win.
UPIKE women's basketball returns to the hardwood on Thursday, January 27th against Georgetown College in the second of a three-game road trip. Tip-off from Georgetown, KY is slated for 6PM.
