UPIKE Takes Down Campbellsville In Huge MSC Victory

Campbellsville, KY – The University of Pikeville women's basketball team defeated the No. 4 Campbellsville University Tigers Saturday afternoon on the road, 70-69. This is their first win over Campbellsville since Feb. 12, 2015.

Mary Englert led the team with 23 points on 7-12 shooting, including 9-10 from the free-throw line. This is Englert's seventh 20-plus point performance this season and second in the last three games. Bailey Frazier also finished with double-digit points, scoring 10. Morgan Stamper had 12 rebounds to lead UPIKE while Englert led with four assists. The win improves UPIKE to 11-10 overall and 5-9 in the Mid-South Conference.

How It Happened
The first half was back and forth with neither team leading by more than three points. It was 12-12 after the first quarter and went into the half at 29-28 after a late Leeanna Mcnulty free-throw propelled UPIKE ahead going into the break.

With the score tied at 39-39 in the third quarter, the Bears began to try and pull away. Seven Englert points ignited a 13-6 run to give UPIKE their biggest lead of the game to that point at 52-45 with 2:25 remaining in the quarter. Englert would score 14 in the third quarter as the Bears brought a 56-52 advantage into the final 10 minutes of play.

The Tigers cut the lead to two on a few occasions early in the fourth quarter and found themselves down by three with 5:50 to play. UPIKE then attempted to shut the door on the game with an 8-1 flurry to give them their largest lead of the game at 69-59 with 2:44 remaining.

However, Campbellsville would not go away without a fight. They scored four points in the next minute to cut the lead to 69-63 with just under two minutes remaining. The Tigers found ways to get to the free-throw line, knocking down five free-throws in the final stretch of the game.

UPIKE led by just two at 69-67 before a foul put Englert at the line, where she split the pair and gave the Bears a 70-67 lead with just seven seconds to play. Campbellsville had a great look from beyond the arc, but it didn't fall before finding a layup to make it a one-point game with under a second to play. The Bears executed the inbounds pass and picked up the big 70-69 victory.
