Pikeville, Ky. - The University of Pikeville Bears hit the pitch against Cumberland University (Tenn.) this afternoon and were defeated 5-2 at Bob Amos.
Today's game between the Bears and the Phoenix was a tale of two halves. Cumberland came out of the gate firing and got on the board in the 8', then followed it up with another goal in the 16' to go up 2-0. The Phoenix added two more goals in the 25' and 26' and took a 4-0 lead. Despite trailing 4-0, the Bears were picking each other up and started to get a few good rushes but could not register a shot on net. UPIKE went into the half trailing 4-0 on the scoreboard and 17-0 in shot attempts.
The Bears came out of halftime much more energetic and the second half was much closer than the first. Cumberland added another goal in the 61', but would score no more in this one. In the 75', Yuri Rocha connected with freshman Paul Kueltz to get the Bears on the board, 5-1. Rocha and Kueltz connected again in the 87' to make the score 5-2. Kueltz's second goal of the afternoon would be the final goal scored by either squad and the Phoenix would take this one 5-2.
Paul Kueltz's two goals in today's game were his third and fourth of the season, respectively. Kueltz is now tied with Daron Baumann and Richard Wohl for team leaders in goals scored with four each on the year.
Sophomore goalkeeper Adam Di Millo made his 11th start in net for the Bears and was 8 for 13 in saves on the day. Di Millo played a big role in rallying the Bears in the second half despite being down on the scoreboard.
Following today's loss, Coach Shaun Schetka's Bears are now 4-7-1 (0-4-1 MSC) on the season. The Bears will take to the pitch again at home this Sunday afternoon against UT-Southern to cap off UPIKE Homecoming 2022.
