Pikeville, Ky. – The Bears found themselves in a second half showdown with (RV) Shawnee State Tuesday evening, fighting off SSU's late run to claim the 73-70 victory.
Led by
Teddy Parham Jr.'s season-high 22-point effort, UPIKE had three finish with double figures.
Devin Collins dropped 17 including a 4-7 showing from deep, while
Korbin Spencer offered 15 points, six rebounds, and three assists.
UPIKE clocked a shooting percentage of over 50% for the second consecutive conference game, dropping in 26-50 from the field. The Bears shot an impressive 60% in the first half, also hitting 5-10 from deep. Although Shawnee State claimed the second half scoring advantage, the Bears capitalized on opportunities at the line and hit 13 free throws.
It was the UPIKE show for the opening ten minutes as Spencer sparked a 21-8 run with a three to begin the game. In the stretch, the Bears hit 9-14 shots led by Parham Jr. and Spencer with seven each.
The Bears were in control the entirety of the first half which featured several impressive threes from Collins including one at the 4:00 mark that put the Bears ahead by 16. UPIKE held a 40-25 lead after 20:00.
The first five minutes of the second half saw much of the same, UPIKE continued on to an 11-6 run led by Collins and Spencer. After the clock past 11:00, SSU lit up out of a timeout on a 13-6 run which included three from deep. With 5:55 to go, SSU had climbed to within six points of the UPIKE lead.
Back to back threes followed from Shawnee, making it 67-64 with 2:42 go. The final two minutes of play were an absolute shootout, and SSU chucked a three that fell with four seconds to play which fell to put them within one possession. The Bears held out on the impending check-in, securing their fourth win of the season.
