3 Bears Set New Personal Bests At Shawnee Meet

Portsmouth, Ohio - The UPIKE men's and women's swim teams traveled north to Shawnee State and competed in their final meet of 2022 today. UPIKE only had three swimmers compete, but all three broke personal records.

Men's Team:

Bryce Barton and Evan Vanlierop both swam in the 50 meter freestyle. Barton finished with a 26.99 and Vanlierop was right behind with a 27.98. It was the first time Barton had a sub-27 score in the 50 meter and Vanlierop's 27.98 was a personal best for him in the 50 freestyle as well.

Barton also competed in the 100 meter butterfly and finished with a time of 1:18.78. In the 100 meter freestyle, Barton finished 1:18.10. Vanlierop finished just ahead of Barton in the 100 freestyle with 1:16.33. Vanlierop also competed in the 100 meter backstroke with a time of 1:34.69.

Women's Team:

Madelyn Smith competed in the 50 meter freestyle, the 100 meter breaststroke and the 400 meter breaststroke. She had a 35.94 in the 50 freestyle, a 1:42 in the 100 breaststroke and a 6:12 in the 400 meter breaststroke. Smith has shown great improvement throughout this season and it was on display again today when she shaved off a whole minute in the 400 meter breaststroke from the last meet.

Coach Bernie Haney spoke glowingly of her squad's performance today, saying "I could not have asked for a better finish to the year with this great group of kids." Haney's squad will be back in action after the New Year when the swim Bears take on Bethel in Pikeville on January 14th.
