PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – University of Pikeville men's and women's swimming took on Shawnee State University in a battle of the Bears Friday night.
On the men's side, RJ Goins took first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:07.53. Goins then took second in the 200 individual medley. Benjamin Mclaughlan finished second in the 100 freestyle and fifth in the 50 backstroke, setting new personal records in both events.
Jacob Rubado competed in the 100 breaststroke, taking second after swimming a 1:20.06. Rubado also swam in the 50 freestyle and recorded a season-best 27.88. Bryce Barton rounded out the men's team scores with a second place finish in the 100 fly and sixth in the 50 backstroke.
On the women's side, Kaylin Hatfield won the 200-freestyle event with a time of 2:33.84. Hatfield also took second in the 400 freestyle. Madelyn Smith took second in the 100 breaststroke. Later, Smith would go on to set a new personal best in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 40.40.
Daylin Patrick competed in the 50 backstroke and the 100 backstroke and set new personal bests in both. Patrick swam 41.81 in the 50, then swam 1:27.52 in the 100. Bailey Walker took second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:29.39 and then swam 38.01 in the 50 freestyle, taking fourth.
Next up for Coach Bernie Haney's swim Bears is a trip to Kingsport, Tenn., on February 12th-14th for the 2026 Appalachian Athletic Conference Championships.
