Crestview Hills, Ky. - The Bears took on the top team in the NAIA, the #1 Thomas More Saints and were defeated 62-57.
Sierra Feltner had the first four points of the game for the Bears. Shortly after, Allie Stone connected from three to get the Bears back in it after falling behind 13-4. The Bears held the Saints to only 16 first quarter points and trailed 16-9 after one.
In the second quarter, Bailey Frazier and Sammi Sites had five points each. The Bears drew a lot of fouls in the first half and went 7-8 from the line in the second quarter. UPIKE stuck around in this game after going on a late 5-0 to close out the first half. After 20 minutes of play, the Bears trailed 31-25.
The Saints scored five early points in the third quarter and went up 11. UPIKE responded with a 9-0 run led by seven points from Sierra Feltner. The Saints hit a jumper to get back up by two possessions, but it did not last long. Sierra Feltner scored her tenth point of the quarter when she hit a three to get within a point of the top-ranked Saints. UPIKE continued to hang around in this game and trailed 45-40 after the third quarter.
UPIKE opened the fourth quarter on a 7-2 run, capped off by a game-tying three by Sammi Sites. TMU broke the tie and went on a 6-0 run over the next three minutes to go up 53-47. Later on, the Bears trailed 56-49 but got back in it after Allie Stone hit a three and Bailey Frazier made a pair of free throws. The Saints got a three-point play shortly after but TMU's five point lead was erased after a three by Bailey Frazier with 0:12 left. After the Saints went 1-2 from the free throw line, the Bears had an opportunity to tie the game but unfortunately could not. The Bears stuck around but Thomas More took this one 62-57.
Sierra Feltner led the Bears with 18 points and Bailey Frazier was second with 15. Sophomore guard Sammi Sites had a season-high 10 points and two rebounds. Morgan Stamper led UPIKE with nine rebounds and three steals.
With tonight's loss to the #1 Saints, the Bears' record drops to 6-4 (5-3 MSC). Coach Clifton Williams' squad will be back in action against Wilberforce University Saturday afternoon at the UPIKE Gym.
