Bears Begin 2022 Season With A Split At Savannah State

Savannah, GA – The University of Pikeville softball team got their 2022 season started Friday afternoon against the Savannah State Tigers with a split of their doubleheader. They won game one 13-2 and dropped the second game 4-1. They start the year off 1-1 and will be back in action tomorrow when they play at the College of Coastal Georgia in Brunswick.

Game 1
UPIKE jumped right out of the gate with a four-run inning in the top of the first, with the first five Bears getting hits and Haleigh Jones, Alexis Roby, and Alyssa Franklin all picking up an RBI in the process. The Bears picked up seven of their 16 hits in the first frame as they took a 4-0 lead.

The Bears would be quieted until the fifth inning where they exploded for nine runs. It started with two hits and a hit by pitch to load the bases for Zoe Ingram. Ingram proceeded to drive a ball over the left-field wall for a grand slam and her first career home run as a Bear, giving UPIKE a commanding 8-0 lead.

Later in the inning, Jones would increase the lead to 11-0 with a two-RBI single before Franklin and Zoey Keeton would both collect RBI singles to finish off the 13-run outing for the Bears. They would win the game 13-2 in five innings as Mattea Ware tossed a complete game in the circle with three strikeouts and no walks.

Game 2
The Bears scored first again in the second game on a Jones RBI groundout to make it 1-0, but that would be all UPIKE could put together. They would have runners in scoring position in the second, third, and seventh innings, but couldn't bring a run home.

The Tigers had just two hits but took advantage of a few Bears errors to come away with the 4-1 victory.

What's Up Next
As mentioned, the Bears will be right back in action tomorrow afternoon at the College of Coastal Georgia beginning at 1:00 p.m. The last time these two teams met was in Macon, GA on Feb. 15, 2019, where the Mariners came from behind and won 2-1.
