Bears Drop Two Hard-Fought Games To Cumberlands

Pikeville, KY – The University of Pikeville baseball team fell in both games of their doubleheader Saturday afternoon against (RV) University of the Cumberlands, 8-5 and 16-12.

Noah Helton led the Bears at the plate with five hits and seven RBI over the two contests. He hit a homerun in both games, with both being game-tying blasts. Ryan Sartin and Demarco Miller both had three RBI in game two, with Miller hitting a three-run homer over the left field wall in the bottom of the ninth inning. Sartin had one hit during the day while Miller had three.

The Bears trailed game-one 3-0 before the aforementioned Helton three-run homerun in the bottom of the fifth tied things at 3-3. The Patriots answered with five in the top of the sixth to take an 8-3 lead. Helton had an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh and Eduardo Bello had an RBI walk, but it wasn't enough as the Bears lost 8-5.

UPIKE trailed 5-2 in game two in the bottom of the fifth inning. UPIKE scored two on a Tyler Maynard RBI double and Sartin sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth inning. During the fifth, Samuel Torres had an RBI groundout to bring in Miller, who singled to start the inning and made it 5-3. Tyler Freas would triple, before Helton hit the game-tying two run homer.

Cumberlands would plate seven more runs over the next two innings to make it 12-5 heading into the bottom of the seventh. UPIKE would load the bases with one out, and bring in two on a Patriot error, before a Sartin two RBI single up the middle made the score 12-9 heading to the eighth inning. The Bears would score three more on the aforementioned Miller homerun, but would lose the game 16-12.
