Campbellsville, KY – The University of Pikeville men's tennis team took down (RV) Campbellsville University 4-3 Saturday evening in a thrilling dual match that came down to the final singles match. This is UPIKE's fourth straight win, as they improve to 6-6 overall and 3-3 in the Mid-South Conference.
UPIKE trailed 3-2 with only matches at No. 4 and No. 5 singles to play.
Juan Diego Medina came up huge for the Bears on court four. He dropped his first set to Nicolas Andrade 6-3 before storming back to tie it with a 6-2 win in set two. In the final set, Andrade held a 5-4 lead and it was a must win game for Medina, who delivered. He won the final three games to take the set 7-5 and the match. This is Medina's third singles win this year.
This tied things up at 3-3 with
Martin Lorenzo's match the final of the day. The sophomore ran past his opponent Mario Sanchez, 6-3, 6-4 to claim the match and the dual match victory for the Bears. This is Lorenzo's sixth singles victory this season.
Valentin Ortiz and
Juan Diego Alzate also won their singles matches for the Bears. Ortiz lost his first set to opponent Jan Stolin 6-1. He then won 6-3 in set two and found himself trailing 4-1 in the final set. Ortiz only lost one more game in a furious comeback to take the set 7-5 and win the match at No. 1. This is his seventh singles win of the year. On court two, Alzate swept his opponent Hernan Toledo 7-5, 6-1 for his 10th singles win of the year.
Despite losing the doubles point, Alzate and
Mirko Dedich won court one 7-6 (6) for their eighth win as a team. This is the Bears first win vs. Campbellsville since a 5-4 win in Pikeville on Apr. 10, 2016.
