Bears Edge Thomas More in Series Opener

Crestview Hills, KY – UPIKE baseball claimed game one of their final regular season MSC series on Friday afternoon, scoring four runs in the last three innings to complete the 5-4 comeback victory.

Ty Crall completed a stellar start on the mound, delivering 7.2 innings. Crall allowed four runs on seven hits and recorded a season high six strikeouts. Grayson Harris finished the game and earned the win after 1.1 innings, shutting out the Saints and allowing a pair of hits.

Offensively it was Tyler Freas, Tyler Maynard, Eduardo Bello, and Greg Lile that connected for hits for UPIKE. Both Lile and Bello busted crucial RBIs, Lile's coming in the top of the eighth where he tied the game at 3-3 with an RBI double to left center. Bello's also tied the game in the top of the ninth. Freas recorded his fourth straight game with a run scored.

Thomas More took the lead with an RBI single in the second frame which would be the only run scored until the top of the fourth. Freas was the game tying run in the fourth inning, hitting a single before working some speedy baserunning magic to score from first on a couple of throwing errors.

The Saints added a pair of runs in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead. The Bears made It a one run game the following inning as a Maynard single to right scored Demarco Miller who reached on a hit by pitch.

Both teams put up a run in the eighth as Bello hit his RBI double that scored Jared Kirkman who was hit by pitch. Trailing 4-3, the Bears came up big in the top of the ninth. With two-outs, two straight walks put Maynard and Ryan Sartin on base before Bello tagged an RBI single to tie the game. Sartin would score the go-ahead run on a wild-pitch on the next at-bat.

The Bears go up against the Saints to wrap up the series tomorrow, April 22nd with a double header starting at 12:00 PM.
