Pikeville, Ky. - University of Pikeville quarterback Lee Kirkland has been named Mid-South Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week.
A week after falling one yard shy of his personal-best 391 yards, Kirkland blew past the mark with a 579-yard, four-touchdown game against Cumberland University on Saturday. Included in Kirkland's 579 yards were eight completions of 20 or more yards, including an 80-yard touchdown to Alex Sanders and a 74-yard touchdown to Derrick Griffith. Both Griffith and Sanders, along with senior Rashad Brown, finished with over 100 yards receiving. Kirkland distributed targets incredibly, as ten different Bears recorded at least one reception against the Phoenix.
Saturday's four-touchdown game was the fourth time in Kirkland's career and the second time this season he has thrown for four scores. Through two games, Lee Kirkland is 57-87, 969 yards, 8 TD, 3 INT, has a passer rating of 182.52 and has been named MSC Offensive Player of the Week twice.
Not only did Kirkland win Player of the Week in back-to-back weeks, but he also made it into the UPIKE football record book for the second-consecutive week. Kirkland is now second all-time in passing yards in a single game with 579, just 28 yards behind Trevor Hoskins' 607 yards against Georgetown set in 2010.
Kirkland's performance helped propel the Bears to a 47-37 win over Cumberland (Tenn.) and moved UPIKE's record to 2-0 (1-0, MSC). The Bears will hit the road for the first time this season to take on the Bethel Wildcats in McKenzie, Tennessee on Saturday.
