Prestonsburg, Ky. - The UPIKE men's golf team teed off in the UPIKE Fall Invitational at Stonecrest Golf Course this weekend and placed second out of six competing squads.
UPIKE had one golfer finish with all-tournament honors. Senior Blake Maupin finished in first place with an even score through both days. Maupin shot a 73 (+1) on day 1 and a 71 (-1) on day 2. Maupin's -1 score on day 2 was his second-best score, one stroke shy of the -2 he shot at the Georgetown College Invitational last October.
Blake Maupin shot a -1 on the front nine on day 2, highlighted with a birdie on the fifth hole. Maupin's day 2 performance on the back nine was nothing short of resilient. After double bogeying on 12 and bogeying 13, Maupin followed up with birdies on the 14, 15, and 17 to cap off an even score. Maupin was the only player in this tournament that did not finish over par.
While the Bears only had one top-5 finisher, they had an additional five finish in the top 20. Nate Feese, who finished with a career-best -3 in the Alice Lloyd Invitational, finished in sixth. Freshman Saul Crist finished 12th, Lawson Hon tied for 13th, Broc Crist tied for 15th and Tyler Ford and Nick Garrett tied for 17th.
The Bears will take to the course again next week at the Glades Spring Resort in Daniels, West Va. for the Golden Bear Classic.
