Offside Calls Sink UPIKE In Loss to Shawnee

Pikeville, Ky. - The University of Pikeville Bears fell 2-1 to the visiting Shawnee State Bears Tuesday night at Bob Amos.

UPIKE had the first great scoring chance of the night in the 16' when a shot from freshman Thivesh Naiker hit the crossbar and Jack Burleson buried the rebound attempt. Unfortunately, Burleson's would-be goal was negated by an offside call. Shortly after the offside call, Shawnee took a 1-0 lead on an unfortunate own-goal by the Bears. UPIKE would go into halftime trailing 1-0.

UPIKE goaltender Adam Di Millo made his ninth start tonight and turned away 14 of the 16 shots he faced. His timely saves kept the Bears in position to tie the game. The Bears were knocking on the door but struggled to find the back of the net until junior midfielder Richard Wohl leveled the score in the 64'. Wohl's equalizing goal was his fourth of the season.

After Wohl's equalizer, Shawnee quickly went on the attack and peppered Adam Di Millo with shots. Di Millo made four saves in a four-minute span, including two impressive saves at point-blank range. Shortly after, Shawnee got another good look and scored the go-ahead goal in the 75' to go up 2-1. This goal would prove to be the game winner, but not without some drama in the final 15.

Tuesday night's battle of the Bears was chippy from the start, with the two squads combining for seven yellow cards and 21 fouls. In the 89', there was a battle for possession deep in the Shawnee end that led to one player on each team being assessed a yellow card. On the ensuing UPIKE free kick, a brilliant set piece found the back of the net but an offside call disallowed the would-be equalizer.

Tonight's loss to Shawnee drops the Bears' Mid-South record to 0-2-1 and their overall record to 4-5-1. Next up for UPIKE is a Saturday night match with their rivals from up the Mountain Parkway and I-64, the Georgetown College Tigers.
