Bears Bested By Tigers

Campbellsville, Ky. - The University of Pikeville Bears were defeated 3-0 tonight by the top team in the Mid-South Conference, the Campbellsville Tigers.

It was a neck-and-neck first set, with the Tigers and Bears going on scoring runs that were matched by the other. The Bears took a 14-13 lead midway through the first, then the Tigers went on a 8-3 run to go up 21-17. Shortly after, the Bears trailed 23-21 when Marianne Negron Cordero recorded a kill to keep the Bears alive. UPIKE forced an error to tie the set at 23-23, but the Tigers would score the next two points to take the set.

With a 1-0 match lead, the Tigers went on the attack early and often in the second set. Campbellsville used runs of 7-0, 8-0 and 4-0 to take a 2-0 match lead. UPIKE struggled to find its footing in the third set and the Tigers took the set and the match, 3-0.

Junior Emily Short, who had five service aces against Shawnee last week, had three aces tonight. Short now has ten service aces in the last four games for the Bears. Cheyenne Martinez led UPIKE in kills (4) and assists (10). Martinez has 275 assists on the year. Mikela Cook and Kiara Warrens both had five digs. Marianne Negron Cordero added four blocks against the Tigers tonight and now has 28 on the year.
