Bears Claim 10th Straight Win with Rout of Lions

Pikeville, Ky. – Seven Bears found their way onto the scoresheet in Saturday's rout of Freed-Hardeman. The win marks the tenth straight for Coach Williams' squad, the longest for UPIKE women's basketball since the 2015 season.

Sierra Feltner led the Bears with 17 points, six rebounds, three assists, and a block. Morgan Stamper finished with 14 points, and six rebounds.

UPIKE won the rebounding battle 27-18, and held the Lions to just two made threes.

Feltner opened the first with a three pointer, followed by a Stamper layup which made it 5-2. The Lions answered with a 7-3 run over the next three minutes which gave them a 9-8 lead with 5:49 to go in the quarter. On a dish from Free, Feltner drilled her second three to return the lead to the Bears and launch an 11-2 run which featured five points from Mary Englert. The Bears found success from deep in the first, hitting 5-6 threes and shooting 57% from the floor. UPIKE held a 23-11 lead heading into the second period.

UPIKE's defense was stellar to open the second and allowed the Lions just a pair of free throws over the first five minutes of the quarter. The Bears benefitted from a free throw and a bucket by Stamper in the span and claimed a 26-13 lead. Later in the quarter, Feltner found net on a challenging bucket, weaving through defenders for the and-one floater to make it 29-13.

Freed -Hardeman battled back in the third, launching a 7-2 run over the first four. Allie Stone splashed a triple to end the run and the Bears were back on the horse with a 7-3 run of their own. Katie Collopy capped the period with another three, securing a 45-30 UPIKE advantage heading into the fourth.

The Lions offensive presence continued to creep up on the Bears but UPIKE stayed ahead via excellent decision making from the floor. From the 3:34 mark on in the fourth, the Bears kept the Lions scoreless, embarking on a 10-0 run. Stone iced the cake with a three pointer as the Bears improved to 15-4.

UPIKE women's basketball returns to action on Thursday, January 26th as they head to Lebanon, Tenn. for a battle with Cumberland University.
