Pikeville, Ky. - UPIKE swim began their 2023-24 schedule against Midway University Saturday.
On the men's side, Bryce Barton scored four points for the Bears, taking second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:06.31. Barton added another nine points in the 200 backstroke. Isaiah Juneau tacked on another four points for the Bears in the 100-yard breaststroke, clocking a time of 1:09.60.
Newcomers RJ Goins and Jacob Rubado made their UPIKE debuts. Goins came in second in the 100 butterfly and second in the individual medley. Rubado took third in the 200 freestyle and third in the 100 freestyle.
On the women's side, Madelyn Smith set a personal best in the 100-yard breastroke with a time of 1:19.68. Smith's new PR scored four points for the team. Smith also recorded points in the 200 individual medley and in the 500 freestyle. Luis Casternda took third in the 200 freestyle, adding another three team points for UPIKE. Casternda also scored points in the 200 backstroke and the 100 freestyle.
Coach Bernie Haney's swim Bears will take on the Midway Eagles again Saturday in Midway.
