Bears close out The Show with win

KINGSPORT, Tenn. – The University of Pikeville put four players in double figures on Sunday afternoon and bounced back with a 71-52 win over Southeastern (Fla.) University to wrap up play in the NAIA showcase The Show.
 
The event was held at the MeadowView Marriott Convention Center & Conference Resort.
 
Sophomore Keian Worrix led the way with 19 points thanks to 6-of-7 shooting and four three-point buckets. He added five rebounds and six assists.
 
Sophomore Kenyan Cutlip came off the bench for 15, while senior Jeremy Dillon had 13 and a team-high seven rebounds. Junior guard Kyonte Thomas chipped in with 12 points and five rebounds.
 
UPike (6-2) took control of the game after the Fire scored consecutive buckets to pull within one. The first game on a dunk by graduate student Anthony Duncan followed by a layup by junior Makai Vassell to make it 14-13 with 12:49 left.
 
From there, the Bears ripped off a prolonged run that lasted nearly 10 minutes and saw the Bears put up 21 of the next 24 points.
 
It start with a three from the wing from junior Kyonte Thomas, followed by five straight by sophomore Keion Worrix, coming on two free throws and a three from the wing. Thomas hit a deep two-point jumper to make it 24-13,
 
Junior Shawn Shore stopped it briefly with an old-fashioned three-point play, but the Bears then kept the hammer down.
 
Sophomores Keynan Cutlip and Bradley Bunch scored on layups, followed by a free throw each by Cutlip and senior Jeremy Dillon.
 
Cutlip followed that with a jumper and a corner three to put the Bears on top 35-16 with 2:41 left.
 
Cutlip had eight and Thomas and Worrix flipped in five each in the stretch, and the Bears led 37-22 at the half.
 
 The Fire (4-5)  lived up to their name early in the second half, reeling off 15 unanswered points. The first eight came on layups by junior Joshua Blazquez and Duncan, followed by Vassell and Duncan.
 
Grad student Reggie Mesidor then had a four-point play and followed it with another three to pull the Fire back within six at 45-39 with 11:58 left.
 
The Bears answered a couple of minutes later with a 12-1 run of their own. It began with a technical free throw by Worrix. Cutlip was in on the action again when he had a three-point play after being fould on a jumper.
 
After junior Derek Murphy made a free throw, Dillon nailed a trey before Thomas hit a corner three and a layup to push the lead back to 59-42 with 8:22 left in the game.
 
The fire had two in double figures, led by Duncan's 17. Blazquez added 12. Vassell, who had six points, led the Fire with eight rebounds.
 
UPike is off until Saturday, Dec. 2 when it travels to Athens, Tenn., to play Tennessee Wesleyan. That game is slated for a 4 p.m. opening tip.
